Sustainability

The entire property is solar powered and can be 100% autonome from the electrical grid when necessary.

Our domestic water comes from a well; we are not connected to a municipal network. We collect rain water and filter our grey and dark waters for irrigation.

The chickens and ducks provide fresh eggs and  maintain the land free of pests without the need for pesticides.

We created a banana circle with a compost pile to dispose of our unprocessed food scraps, enriched with chicken manure to feed our food forest.

Dead edges were built as a wind barrier using branches and cutting from landscaping. As the dead edges decompose, we keep adding material, creating shelter for the local wildlife and eliminating the need to burn thus reducing our carbon footprint.

Quinta do Burro is also a bee haven. We keep our fields uncut until flowing season ends, to provide food for our and wild bees as well as other pollinators.

We use eco friendly products for cleaning, washing. We use the latest technology to dry and iron our laundry: a clothes line, the sun and the wind.
